There’s a specific kind of dread every network engineer knows: the moment a single point of failure in your architecture finally gets found, usually between 2 AM and 6 AM, during a client’s most critical workload. In designing network infrastructure, I’ve learned that redundancy isn’t a nice-to-have line item; it’s the whole point. Early in my career as a Network Technician, I learned the hard way that a single connection path, no matter how fast, no matter how well provisioned, is one fibre cut, one router failure, one bad config push away from taking an entire business offline. Everything I’ve built since, from Mbineko’s sensor networks to facility monitoring systems, has been designed around the assumption that the primary path will fail eventually. The question was never “if”; it was, what happens next?
Cassava Technologies, through its businesses Africa Data Centres and Liquid C2, has expanded Africa’s cloud resilience capabilities after Africa Data Centres was designated a Microsoft Azure ExpressRoute Metro peering location in Johannesburg, the first of its kind on the continent.
Here’s what that actually means in plain terms: ExpressRoute Metro routes a single connection through two peering locations in the same metro area, adding built-in redundancy for mission-critical workloads. Africa Data Centres’ JHB1 facility becomes the second peering location within the Johannesburg metro offering this capability, and Liquid C2 Cassava’s cloud and cybersecurity business will deliver a managed service called Secure CloudConnect on top of it, combining resilient private cloud connectivity with integrated cybersecurity, using its position as the only provider with an on-net presence in both locations.
Cassava South Africa and Botswana SVP Ziaad Suleman called it a defining moment for the company’s infrastructure ambitions, framing it as proof of growing confidence in the continent’s ability to support next-generation cloud and AI-driven services. Microsoft South Africa CEO Vukani Mngxati backed that up, positioning it as part of South Africa building, not just consuming, the infrastructure trust needed to compete in a global digital economy.
This is a genuinely significant infrastructure milestone, and it’s worth being specific about why. Enterprise and financial services workloads running on Azure in South Africa have historically had to accept a single path of connectivity risk, or build their own costly redundancy from scratch. ExpressRoute Metro removes that trade-off at the infrastructure level, in-region, for the first time on the continent.
For South Africa specifically, this lands at a moment when regulators are placing greater emphasis on operational resilience, business continuity, and data protection, meaning banks, insurers, and other regulated industries now have a locally available way to meet those requirements without routing failover through Europe or elsewhere.
The ripple effect matters beyond South Africa too. Cassava operates across 94 countries through Liquid Intelligent Technologies, Africa Data Centres, and its other business units. Zambia, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, and the wider Southern and East African corridor all sit within reach of this infrastructure play. When Johannesburg gets designated as a global-tier peering hub, it strengthens the case for routing African cloud and AI workloads through African infrastructure instead of defaulting to European or Middle Eastern data centres, which has real implications for latency, data sovereignty, and cost for businesses across the continent.
The press release language leans hard into “AI-driven services” and “digital ambition,” which is standard corporate positioning, but let’s separate the infrastructure achievement from the AI narrative wrapped around it. This designation is about network path redundancy for enterprise cloud connectivity. It’s a real and useful thing. It is not, by itself, an AI infrastructure story, no matter how many times “AI-driven” gets mentioned.
It’s also worth noting this is currently a Johannesburg-only capability. One city, one metro, positioned as “Africa’s cloud resilience” milestone. That’s fair framing for a genuine first, but the real test is whether Cassava extends ExpressRoute Metro-grade redundancy to its other African markets, or whether Johannesburg stays the flagship showcase while the rest of the continent waits.
This is one of the more substantive African cloud infrastructure announcements this year, not because of the AI buzzwords attached to it, but because redundant connectivity to hyperscale cloud is genuinely rare on this continent and genuinely necessary for it to compete. Cassava’s next move should be extending this same architecture to Nairobi and Lagos within 18 months; if it doesn’t, this stays a Johannesburg story instead of becoming the African cloud resilience story it’s being marketed as.
